Tensions ran high Thursday evening at the second community meeting with Interim Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez, regarding the possible closing of Velarde Elementary School. In a special Board of Education meeting the Española School Board met at Carlos Vigil Middle School Friday evening to adopt a budget for the 2015 – 16 school year. Over the past week the school board met four times to develop two possible budget options from which they selected Friday night. Read on to learn how the Board is closing the budget deficit.
Wednesday night the Española Schools Board of Education voted to sue PED in order to force the department to approve the plan to close Velarde Elementary. Española Schools are in the middle of budget preparations for the 2015-16 school year and are facing a $1.9 million shortfall. Closing Velarde Elementary could save the district $250,000. Española Public Schools Board of Education voted in February to consolidate Velarde elementary with Alcalde Elementary and sent the request to the State’s Public Education Department (PED) for approval. After several months of deliberation PED Secretary Hanna Skandera declined the request in a letter dated May 22 and delivered to the Superintendent on June 3.
