Lady Sundevils Upset Hornets, Can’t Break Broncos

The Española Valley High School Lady Sundevils were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the media interview room despite having just played a basketball game at the early hour of 8 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state basketball tournament March 12 at The Pit in Albuquerque. Kaylee Chavez, Anita DeAguero and Destiny Valdez had reason to smile because the 13th-seeded Sundevils had just pulled off a 54-44 upset win over the fifth-seeded Highland High School Lady Hornets at The Pit.

Lady Sundevils Take Tournament Championship

The Española  Valley High School Lady Sundevils had no problems putting away the St. Michael’s High School Lady Horsemen in the championship game of the Lady Horsemen Invitational basketball tournament Dec. 30 in Santa Fe.
With post Alexis Lovato returning to form and controlling the paint, the Lady Sundevils launched bomb after three-point bomb over the sagging defense of the Lady Horsemen from the perimeter. Española  led 16-6 after the first quarter and 29-12 at halftime.
Española’s lead grew to as many as 32 points in the second half before Coach Cindy Roybal emptied…
