Ruben O. Lucero, Sr. An Amazing Former Athlete And Coach, Now On Chain Gang At 81 With Son And Granddaughter, And Starter For XC And Track

Photo shows Ruben O. Lucero, 81, originally of Garita, NM, but a longtime Espanola resident, wearing Chain Gang attire, talking to a Show Low Cougar football player at the EVHS home game on Friday, August 26, against the Arizona school. Lucero, his son, Larry and Larry’s daughter, Elizabeth, make up a family trio of  “Chain Gang” members, likely the only three generation chain gang in the state, and most certainly the only one where one of the chain gang team  members is a young lady. Lucero, Sr. has had a stellar athletic and coaching career. He is often called the “Father of Cross Country” in northern New Mexico. Lucero also is quick to credit Coach Clyde Fawcett of Santa Fe High as the other pioneer in the sport of cross country in northern New Mexico.   Photo by ROBERT NARANJO /valleydailypost
