Summer Solstice Celebration – the 40th Year of 3HO’s Annual Yoga Festival in Espanola

Early summer is beautiful in the Espanola Valley – long warm days, cool nights, and the gardens bursting with greenery.  It is now, at the end of June, that the town surprisingly fills up with young people dressed in white, coming from all over the world and heading up into the mountains for the 3HO yoga festival (Healthy Happy Holy Organization).

3HO’s Summer Solstice Celebration is a 9-day spiritual gathering above the Pajarito Plateau on a land called “Guru Ram Das Puri.” The first 3HO Summer Solstice Celebration at Guru Ram Das Puri was in 1977, making this year the 40th anniversary of the event.  Today there are over 2,000 people who come and camp in the desert, joining their hearts and prayers for peace in the world.  The Summer Solstice Celebration includes Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®, morning meditations, live music, a wealth of courses on spirituality, and the all-pervasive bright, uplifting energy created by people doing good work and living in their highest consciousness.

Kundalini Yoga was brought to the United States from India in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan, a great teacher and master of Kundalini Yoga. When he arrived in California he met hundreds of young people seeking meaning and direction in their life.  Soon after, in 1969, he created the 3HO Foundation, the Healthy, Happy and Holy Organization, whose mission is to share the technology and lifestyle of Kundalini Yoga and meditation and support those who practice this technology around the world. 3HO was just what was and is needed for the times.  It took hold and spread fast. Kundalini Yoga and the 3HO lifestyle are now taught and practiced in more than 56 countries worldwide.

Yogi Bhajan came to New Mexico in 1970 for the first time and fell in love with the innate spirituality of this land. It wasn’t long before he called it his home.  He founded the spiritual Sikh community in Sombrillo, which is today a growing and vibrant neighborhood. He established Akal Security in 1980, and other businesses that continue to significantly contribute to the economy of the Valley.

3HO’s Summer Solstice Celebration begins on June 17 with “Peace Prayer Day,” a wonderful day of music, dance, and prayer that is open to the public 10:45 AM – 9:45 PM.  A highlight of Peace Prayer Day is the awarding of “Live to Give” grants to outstanding non-profit organizations.  This year, grants are given to:

  • “Drop in the Bucket” - bringing clean water to schools in sub-Saharan Africa.
  •  “Light a Path” – connecting yoga teachers and therapists with the people who need it most.
  • “Yoga4Alex” – supporting youngsters in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • “Yoga Kidz” – sharing yoga with the underserved youth of South Carolina.
  • “Golden Sol” – serving food to homeless women in downtown Los Angeles.
  • “Walking for Water” – providing drinking water in Burkina Faso.
