The spotlight was on the Española Valley High School junior varsity boys basketball team last week. With the varsity Sundevils not seeing action until Dec. 7 at the Sandia Prep Tournament, the junior Sundevils made some noise by advancing to the championship game of the Santa Fe Indian School tournament as the only junior varsity team participating in the tournament. They lost to host Santa Fe Indian School 74-66 in the championship game Dec. 2 in Santa Fe.
The Española Valley High School girls basketball team keeps taking steps forward to prove themselves. The Lady Sundevils overcame a tough loss against defending Class 5A state champion Goddard High School in the opening round and won its next two games to take the consolation championship of the Al Armendariz Tournament Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at Capital High School in Santa Fe. After a brief period of cold weather with temperatures dropping down into the teens here in the Espanola Valley and in some mountain towns single digits, the weather has fallen back into a pattern of dry with above-average temperatures. There have been a lot of birds of prey migrating down the Rio Grande recently. I’ve seen several large raptors like red-tailed hawks and northern harriers circling the bosque. A sharp-shinned hawk actually killed a bird in our back yard. Eagles should start to show up around Abiquiu Lake soon and thre are usually some that spend the winter along the Rio Grande.
