Elkettes take third place at St. Michael’s

It’s a different Pojoaque Valley High School girls basketball team this season. After a disappointing 7-20 record and ending last season not going to the Class 4A state tournament, the Elkettes are a team that fights to the end.

“We’re not giving up,” senior Aaliyah Casados said. “We’re playing hard, playing good and trying to compete.”

Lady Sundevils Take First At St. Michael’s Tournament

The Española Valley High School Lady Sundevils won their second tournament championship so far this season, knocking off host St. Michael’s High School 51-33 in the championship game of the Lady Horsemen Tournament  Dec. 30 in Santa Fe. Española had taken first place in the Jaguar Invitational  Tournament Dec. 5 in Santa Fe.

Escalante Dominates As All State Teams Selected

Three local football teams had players named to the 2015 All State teams. 

The Escalante High School football team placed six players on the Class 2A All-State first team offense and six players on the All-State first team defense. The two-time defending state champions dominated the All-State team selected by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association...

Elias Archuleta sank six three-pointers and scored 18 points in Espanola Valley’s 50-44 victory over St. Michael’s Dec. 16 in Santa Fe. The Sundevils are 8-3 on the season after losing 80-66 to Robertson Dec. 18 in Las Vegas. Espanola returns to action Dec. 28 at the Rio Rancho Holiday Tournament in Rio Rancho.

Lady Sundevils Win Over Santa Fe Demons After Falling To Valencia

McCurdy Girls Win Over Santa Fe Indian School

The Class 2A McCurdy Charter School Lady Bobcats were the smallest school competing in the girls portion of the Ben Lujan Tournament hosted by Pojoaque Valley High School. Not only that, McCurdy does not have a player taller than 5 feet, 7 inches. It was their big hearts that carried them to a 36-34 upset of the Class 4A Santa Fe Indian School Lady Braves Dec. 17 in the opening round of the tournament.

Elkettes Fall To St. Mike’s In Tournament Championship

The Pojoaque Valley High School Elkettes had no trouble scoring points in the first two rounds of the Ben Lujan Tournament at Pojoaque, beating Socorro High School by nearly 40 points 56-17 in the opening round Dec. 17 and then defeating Wingate High School 59-39 in the semifinals Dec. 18 to advance to the championship game Dec. 19 against St. Michael’s High School.

McCurdy boys, girls remain undefeated

The McCurdy Charter School boys and girls basketball teams both improved to 4-0 with victories Dec. 10 at McCurdy.

The Lady Bobcats won a laugher, pounding Desert Academy 66-5 after leading 38-1 at halftime. At least the boys game was close for a half against the Monte del Sol Charter School Dragons, but the final score turned out to be a 32-point blowout 74-42 in favor of the Bobcats...
