Sipapu Starts Making Snow ... 18 Days To Ski Season!

  • The Race to be the First in New Mexico to Open Has Begun!

VADITO – The sprint to open New Mexico's ski slopes has officially begun. Sipapu Ski Resort started making snow at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 through 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 22.  Mountain crews anticipate making more snow this week as the resort prepares for opening day, Saturday, Nov. 11.

Sipapu’s crews were able to use 17 snow guns and make snow on intermediate and beginner trails Butterfly, Thumper and Lower Bambi and plan to continue these efforts this week as a cold front rolls through the area.

“We were able to take full advantage of the freezing temperatures and low humidity to make snow over the weekend, focusing on covering key intermediate and beginner terrain off of Lift 5 and Lift 2,” said John Paul Bradley, mountain manager at Sipapu Ski Resort.

With snow and cold temperatures in the forecast this week, Sipapu is on track to be the first resort to open in New Mexico for the 15th consecutive season.

“All of us at Sipapu are eager to hit the slopes again for ski season,” Bradley said. “We’ll continue our efforts and take advantage of these cold temps to make more snow and get the resort ready for opening day.”

New for winter at Sipapu!
Sipapu has completed renovations that included a new 2,141 square foot addition to the historic Lodge, which will open this winter.  The renovations include a new rental shop with upgraded ski and snowboard rental equipment, a new Ticket Office, retail space, and improved traffic flow with more gathering space, new bathrooms, and a ski locker room.

Sipapu continues to enhance its ability to teach others how to ski and snowboard, and has installed a new hand rail on the ski school’s magic carpet. The widening of the intermediate trail, “Beep Beep,” also was recently completed.
