Safety Advice For Santuario Pilgrims

Staff Report

Easter is less than two weeks away so local first responders are getting ready for the annual pilgrimage to the Santuario of Chimayo during the Easter holiday weekend. Law enforcement, emergency services and safety regulators from several local Pueblos, the City of Española, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe County are working collectively to assure every safety measure is taken and precaution is in place for walkers and event coordinators alike and they offer the following advice for those who will be making the trek to Chimayo.

Walkers and vendors are given the following tips:

  • Walk against traffic
  • Dress appropriate for weather and wear comfortable walking shoes
  • If walking at night, wear reflective clothing and use flashlights and glow sticks
  • Keep an eye out for water stations and first aid booths
  • Stay hydrated
  • In case of an emergency, dial 911
  • Keep animals on a leash
  • Assure small children are kept close to adults
  • Diabetes patients are encouraged to carry water and snacks at all times
  • No vending, except on private properties with the proper county permit.  ( For more information on permit requirements, contact the Planning & Zoning Department of Rio Arriba County at 505 753-7774.

All the entities that are working together have already begun meeting to coordinate emergency communication strategies, traffic flow regulation and emergency preparation strategies.”

About 31 entities will be working together at this year’s event to guarantee the safety of the public. There will also be about 30 entities that will be on standby.  For more information concerning safety measures for the Santuario Pilgrimage, please call the Rio Arriba County Fire & Emergency Services at (505) 747-1941.
