Pojoaque Pulls Off The Upset, Beats Robertson 58-52

The Pojoaque Valley High School Elkettes beat the Robertson High School Lady Cardinals in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state basketball tournament March 6 at the Pit in Albuquerque. It was the fourth meeting between the two teams. Robertson had won the three previous meetings. The Elkettes won the game that mattered the most.

Overcoming an 11-point deficit in the third quarter, the Elkettes came back in the fourth quarter to take a 47-44 lead  with eight seconds remaining in regulation. Robertson’s Maria Barela hit a big three-pointer to tie the score at 47-47. On the ensuing possession, Robertson’s Tessa Ortiz was fouled. With a cance to win the game for the Cardinals, Ortiz missed the front end of a one-and-one from the free-throw line. That sent the game into a four-minute overtime.

After Robertson missed a three-pointer, Pojoaque drew a foul . That sent Adrianna Quintana to the free-throw line. She buried both shots to put Pojoaque ahead. Another miss by the Cardinals and another foul sent Dallas Archibald to the line for Pojoaque. Archibald nailed two more free throws to give the Elkettes a 51-47 lead.

Ortiz sank a three-pointer to make it a one-point game 51-50. Pojoaque point guard Taylor Roybal had the answer, draining a big three-pointer to give Pojoaque a 54-50 lead with 1:12 left in the game. A basket by Barela made the score 54-52 in  favor of Pojoaque. The Elkettes answered with a basket by Shania Thronas that made it a four-point game 56-52 with 30 seconds left to play.

The cardinals missed a shot and a breakaway layup by the Eklkettes for the final two points of the game to give Pojoaque the biggest upset so far of the state tournament over the second-seeded Cardinals. Pojoaque advances to the Class 4A semifinals.
