The obituaries for Millie Amaya, Grace Valdez, Frances Y. Vigil and Jose O. Salazar have been provided by the families or funeral homes. Please read on for full details.

Millie Amaya of Española

Millie Amaya, 73, a resident of Española formally of Taos, passed away on Sunday January 21, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her son, Freddie Maestas Sr. and parents Eloy and Carmen Maestas.

A special thank you to Pita Jaramillo, Kathy Brandstetter, Melba McNeil, Priscilla Romero and many other friends and family for their love and attention to Millie during this difficult time. Millie was formally employed at Stop & Eat along with various other establishments throughout the Española Valley.

She is survived by her sister, Joan Maestas, Brother Richard Hammitt both of Taos N.M., daughter-in-law, Patricia Maestas (Freddie), Dilia Maestas, both of Albuquerque N.M., granddaughter Randi Votta(Johnathan) of Houston T.X., grandsons, Freddie Maestas Jr. and Rikki Maestas and four great-grandchildren.

Serving the family as honorary pallbearers, Matthew Le Doux, Freddie Maestas Jr. Rikki Maestas, Nathan Montoya, Rudy Perea, Ernest Lopez, and Gabriel Casias.

A rosary will be recited on Thursday February 1, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with a memorial mass to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Francis de Assisi Catholic Church in Ranchos de Taos,  with a burial to follow at the Talpa Cemetery. A reception will be held immediately following the burial at the Talpa community center.

Grace Valdez of Jacona

Grace Valdez, 79, a resident of Jacona formerly of El Rito North was born on September 28, 1938 and went to be with our Lord on Friday, January 26, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Benito; parents, Rufino and Cordelia Garcia; siblings, Isaac, Dorothy, Julia, Mary and Juan; In-laws, Valentine and Eva Valdez, Andy, Lucas, Luben and Maria.

Grace was a hobbyist at heart and always had projects to do, whether it was sewing, quilting, crocheting, ceramics and even carpentry. Growing up in the mountains, she loved the outdoors. She enjoyed camping and going for piñon and fire wood. She will be missed by all who knew her and crossed her path.

Grace is survived by her 4 children, Darlene (Arsenio), Laureen (Alec), Dennis and Patrick (Kathy) Valdez; 9 grandchildren, Delaine, Amanda (Cliff), Matthew (Spencer), Andrew (Elizabeth), Alana, Jerry Lee, Mikey, Shannon, and Pierce; 3 great grandkiddos, Ben, Ava and Adrick; honorary friend, Deacon John Archuleta; siblings, Eugene (Esther) Garcia and Evangeline (Lawrence) Jaramillo; In-laws, Gregoria (Joe) Tafoya, Irma (Joe) Lujan, Mela Sanchez, Tony (Tessie) Valdez, Felia Duran, Corina (Joe) Romero, Michael (Terry) Valdez, Virginia Garcia, Liz Garcia and numerous nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be Matt Salazar, Andrew Salazar, Arsenio Gallegos, Alec Mottershead, George Sanchez, Brent Jaramillo, Jerry Lee Gutierrez and Chris Garcia.

Public visitation will begin on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nambe, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a burial to follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Nambe.

Frances Y. Vigil of Chimayo

Frances Y. Vigil, a resident of Chimayo, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2018 following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Estanislado (Tiny) and Soraida Vigil; maternal grandparents, Ramon and Pablita Jaramillo; paternal grandparents, Fabian and Sabina Vigil; brother, Cecilio Vigil; nephews, Chris Vigil and Nino Martinez. Frances is survived by her daughter, Christina “Tina” Martinez (Manuel); grandchildren, Christiana and Manuel Martinez; companion, Ray Romero; siblings, Michael Vigil (Hilda), Elvira Rios, Sandra and Darlene Vigil.

A rosary was recited on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo with a memorial mass celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Burial followed at the Nuestra Señora de Dolores Cemetery also in Chimayo.

Jose O. Salazar of Alcalde

Jose O. Salazar, 48, a resident of Alcalde, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018. Jose was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Luis Minis Vasquez and Margarita, paternal grandparents, Esqueipula and Ciria Salazar; special uncles, Joe Eddie, Jimmy Vasquez; and father, Armando “Jose” Salazar. 

He is survived by his mother, Connie Vasquez and Miguel Campos; step-mother, Lydia Salazar; son Darren Salazar, daughter, Ruby Salazar; mother of his children, Maria Olga Terraza; brothers and sisters, Gilbert and wife Tila of Alcalde, Margie Vasquez and companion Denise Martinez of Hernandez, Edward Dunaway and Jose Mascarenas of Alcalde, Beverly Salazar Gomez and husband Gerald of Española, Bernadette Salazar and companion, Tommy Archuleta of Santa Fe, Paul Padilla of Española, aunts and uncle Rosie Rodriguez, aunt/Godmother and husband Anival of Albuquerque, a very special uncle that he really admired Dennis Vasquez of Penasco, Becky Frease and husband Jim of Tooele Utah, Josie Romero and the late Pete of Monte Vista, Colorado, Minnie Vasquez of Albuquerque, Florence Vasquez of Penasco, Johnny Vasquez and wife Lorraine of Taos, Fidel Vasquez of Penasco and a very special niece whom he considered like a sister Kacie Ranes; nieces and nephews Margarita, Anjelica, Louisa, Gibbi, Nicolas, and Zeb of Alcalde.

A very special thanks to DeVargas Funeral Home and Justin-Salazar Torres and staff and all of Jose family and friends for all of the Love and support they gave him through his lengthy illness.

Public visitation was on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, January 29, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Alcalde, with a burial at Loma Vista Cemetery.

Serving the family as pallbearers are Darren Salazar, Jonathan Griego, Jose Mascarenas, Danny Ranes, Giovanni Gomez and Derek Archuleta, honorary pallbearers are Justin-Salazar Torrez, Sarah Fina Aguino-Flores, D’Angelo Gomez, Roseann and Elaine Rodriguez.
