Ermelinda F. Martinez of Cuarteles

Ermelinda F. Martinez, 87 of Cuarteles, passed away peacefully in her home on November 30, 2017.  Ermelinda was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Ascencion Martinez, and siblings, Rubel Martinez, Rose Florence and Isabel Montoya.

She graduated from Santa Cruz High School as valedictorian in 1950. She then continued her education at The University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Texas Technological College in Lubbock, Texas. Throughout her career, she had several employers including Kirtland Air Force Base, the Department of Interior in Carlsbad, the Atomic Energy Commission, the Española Hospital and the office of Dr. Leonard Akes.

Ermelinda is survived by her sisters: Adelina Quintana, Amada Villareal, Dilia Martinez (Gilbert), sister-in-law Laura Martinez, dedicated caretaker and niece, Barbara Akes as well as many adoring nieces and nephews. 

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. at Santa Cruz de la Cañada Catholic Church in Santa Cruz.  Burial to follow at the Santa Cruz de la Cañada Catholic Cemetery. Ermelinda’s honorary pallbearers are Floyd Quintana and Tim Martinez. 

The family of Ermelinda F. Martinez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 



Theresa A. Aranda of Española

Theresa A. Aranda, 73, a resident of Española, passed away on November 26, 2017. Theresa was preceded in death by her Sister, Orella Castillo; mother Benita Martinez, father, Filiberto Martinez.

Theresa is our beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend.  She was an empathic, kind, generous, loving, giving, talented, artistic and beautiful woman inside and out.  There was never a time she didn’t have a beautiful elated smile that brought joy to all who knew and loved her. She gave whole heartedly and unconditionally to those she knew and loved and also held out a helping hand to anyone in need.  Theresa remains forever in our hearts.

Theresa is survived by her brothers and sisters, Lloyd Martinez, Phil Martinez, Ralph Martinez, Lorraine Herrera, and Yolanda Martinez; her children; sons, Emmanuel Vigil, Son Randy Vigil, Lawrence Vigil, daughter, Melissa Vigil; her grandchildren, Kraig Maestas, Kayla-Joy Krueger, Leticia Vigil, Lawrence R. Vigil Jr., Paolo Vigil, Nicco Vigil, Carlo Vigil, Emmanual Vigil Jr, and great-grandson, Jack Krueger, and many nieces and nephews who she loved deeply. 

Public visitation was on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary recited at 4:00 p.m.
