Moving Arts Española and Teatro Paraguas host Atravesada: Poetry of the Borderlands

Special performance benefits local immigrant rights group.

ESPAÑOLA, NM – On Saturday, Aug. 18, Moving Arts Española hosts Sanctuary and Unity, a special performance to benefit the work of the local immigrant rights group Somos Española. The event features a bilingual performance of Atravesada: Poetry of the Borderlands, presented by Teatro Paraguas, and a community dinner.
Somos Española is the local membership team of Somos Un Pueblo Unido, a statewide immigrant-led civil and workers’ rights organization. It is made of local immigrant families that have worker for the last seven years to pass sanctuary policies at the school district, city and county level in the Valley. The group is currently focusing on defending and protecting their families from separation and detention.

Since taking office, the Trump administration has ramped up detentions and deportations across the country, including here in Española. The recent increase in immigration enforcement activity in Rio Arriba County has resulted in the separation of families and is directly impacting the emotional, physical and financial well-being of many local long-time residents.
Atravesada explores the physical and political U.S.-Mexico border and also the Borderlands of the Self. Woven with corridos and other music of the frontera (the borderlands), the performance has plenty of humor, but also offers an unflinching portrait of the border as “una herida abierta.”
In addition to music, the performance weaves together the poetry and prose of more than a dozen poets, including the most famous of the genre: Gloria Anzaldúa, Cordelia Candelaria, Lorna Dee Cervantes, Sandra Cisneros, Margarita Cota-Cárdenas, Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Aracelis Girmay, Demetria Martínez, Valerie Martínez, Pat Mora, Mary Helen Ponce, Francis Santana, Gary Soto and Gina Valdés.
