Gabriel Huerta Brings Home Two Medals from Australia

Local Valley resident, Gabriel Huerta represented the State of New Mexico in track and field in Australia at the Down Under Sports tournament held at Griffin Field in Brisbane Australia, July 3 thru July 10, 2017. Close to 300 athletes were selected to represent their state and as part of the USA team to run against Australia, Jamaica, New Zeeland, and Fiji.

Upon arrival and after a 14-hour flight Tuesday, July 4, in Brisbane, Gabriel and the rest of the athletes had practice and met all their other coaches. Thursday, July 6, was their second and final practice.  All the sprinters had to run 100 meters and based on their time, they were placed on a relay team.  Gabriel was placed on team A, for the 16-17 year olds, which proved to be the Gold team, as they came in first across the finish line, running the 4 X 100.

This team consisted of 2 athletes from New Mexico, one being Gabriel, an athlete from Chicago, and one from Wisconsin.  There were three days of competition, which started Friday, July 7 and ended Sunday, July 9.

The coaches selected the 4 X 400 team on Sunday afternoon, which consisted of Gabriel, a teammate from Colorado, one from California and one from Ohio.   For this relay, Gabriel would have to run the 18 and up bracket, which still brought the USA team the bronze medal.

While in Australia, Gabriel was able to go scuba diving, visit a kangaroo statuary, hold a Panda, and enjoy the beach.  In Hawaii, he went surfing, went on a tour of Oahu, and attended a luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Once again, the Huerta Family would like to thank everyone who helped with all the fundraising and support that made this incredible opportunity possible for Gabriel to participate in this international event.
