Staff Report

The Española Valley High School Class of 2017 graduated Saturday, in front of a packed audience in the Edward Medina Gym.

Excited graduates politely marched into the gym, many wearing stoles acknowledging their academic success, and with colorful personal decorations on their mortar boards, or graduation caps.

The Senior Class invited Ryan Cordova, Northern New Mexico College Athletic Director to present the keynote address, and graduating senior, Kyle Alarid to perform “Time of Your Life” on guitar.

Salutatorian Kathleen Gonzales gave an inspirational speech to the graduating class and then the co-valedictorians spoke. Co-valedictorians Adan Casados and Mario Martinez spoke about becoming friends in 7th grade and realizing that they were both highly motivated and competitive. They agreed then to try and be co-valedictorians, and six years later their plan worked out.

A class video towards the end of the event let the graduates speak for themselves, many thanking those who helped them succeed and laying out their plans for college, the military or other ideas.

And then the graduating seniors accepted their diplomas as members of the school board, acting superintendent Denise Johnston and Principal Robert Archuleta congratulated each graduate.
