The Española bowling team has 15 members and are coached by Ruben Aguilar and Jeanie Brito. Assistant Coach Michael Grubbs helps coach Española’s advanced bowlers.

Bowling was officially recognized by the New Mexico Activities Association in 2006. A total of 39 high schools across the state participate. During the season, teams from all classes compete against each other at tournaments throughout the state. During the State Bowling Tournament, the schools are divided into three classes - A-4A, 5A, 6A. They compete for the state championship in their respective classes.

Schools divide their members into four teams of five bowlers each. There are rookie, novice, intermediate and advanced teams. Since Española has 15 bowlers, they competed in the rookie, novice and advanced competition at Big Rock. In some tournaments, the Sundevils will field a team in the intermediate competition. Schools can choose to enter two teams or more in some competitions.

In tournament and state competition, each member of the respective teams bowl two games as individuals. After that, the teams compete in seven games under the “Baker” format.

In “Baker” competition, each member of the team bowls two frames in each game.

“You try to have your best bowler in the 5th frame so they can bowl the 10th frame,” Coach Aguilar said. “You also want a good bowler in the fourth frame to set it up for the fifth frame.”

Española has had good success in bowling competition, placing second at state in Class 5A in 2016. So far this season the Sundevils have competed in four tournaments

Española placed sixth and 14th in the intermediate competition Nov. 11 at Ten Pins & More in Rio Rancho.

The Sundevils’ novice team took first place in the novice competition Nov. 18 at Holiday Bowl in Albuquerque. Española was ninth in the intermediate competition and 11th in the rookie.

At Starlight Lanes in Bernalillo Dec. 2, the Sundevils took second in the novice competition, eighth in the intermediate competition and eighth in the rookie competition.

The next tournament for Española will be Dec. 16 at Silva Lanes in Albuquerque.

“After a tournament in Albuquerque, we ate at Dion’s,” Coach Aguilar said. “They told us that they’d never had anyone as clean and respectful as this school. I’ve got a great bunch of kids, really great.”
