Elkettes Take Title At Moriarty Tourney, Still Undefeated

Elkettes Take Title at Moriarty Tourney, Still Undefeated

The Pojoaque Valley High School girls basketball team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 45-30 victory Dec. 18 at Pojoaque. The Elkettes had won the championship of the Alice King Invitational basketball tournament hosted by Moriarty High School. Pojoaque has taken over the top spot in the MaxPreps statewide polls for Class 4A.

Led by junior post Ashten Martinez and senior point guard Taylor Roybal, the Elkettes defeated Cobre High School 65-22 Dec. 13 in the opening round of the Alice King tournament. In the semifinals, Pojoaque prevailed over a tough Miyamura High School team 58-53 to advance to the championship game. The Elkettes dominated Grants High School 54-31 Dec. 15 in the championship game. Martinez named the tournament’s most valuable player and Roybal to the all-tournament team. Tonni Aquino was also named to the all-tournament team for Pojoaque.

After advancing to the semifinals of the Class 4A state basketball tournament last season, the Elkettes are off to a fast start. Coach Seledon Martinez enters his fourth season at the helm of the Elkettes and in addition to Roybal and Martinez, returns veterans Michaela Martinez, Camille Cordova and Adriana Quintana. Alicia Sanchez and Aquino will have expanded roles on this year’s team, while guard Hennessie Calabaza helps in the backcourt.

Pojoaque hosts the Ben Lujan Invitational tournament which begins Thursday (12/20) and the Elkettes face McCurdy Charter School in the opening round. The Elkettes are the defending tournament champions. The Pojoaque boys team faces Escalante High School in the opening round. Bernalillo High School is the defending tournament champion of the boys division and returns to defend its title.
