The Pojoaque Valley High School girls basketball team secured a second-place finish in District 2-4A with a 51-40 victory over West Las Vegas High School Feb. 14 at Pojoaque. Improving to 20-4 on the season and 6-2 in District 2-4A, the Elkettes will host the District 2-4A semifinals Thursday (2/22) at Pojoaque.

A victory in the semifinals give Pojoaque another crack at their nemesis in District 2-4A, the Robertson High School Lady Cardinals. Robertson dealt Pojoaque their two district losses and took first place in District 2-4A with an 8-0 record. Alianza Darley, who scored 25 points in the Cardinals’ 56-39 victory over Pojoaque Jan. 31 at Pojoaque, lit up the scoreboard for 38 points when Robertson beat Pojoaque Feb. 17 in Las Vegas. The Cardinals will host the District 2-4A tournament championship game Friday (2/23) in Las Vegas

Against the Lady Dons, the Elkettes had some problems putting away West Las Vegas despite leading for most of the game. Pojoaque took the lead in the first quarter and never trailed again. With the game tied 8-8, Shania Thronas scored inside and drew a foul. She sank the ensuing free throw to give Pojoaque an 11-8 lead. A basket by Michaela Martinez and another basket by Thronas gave Pojoaque a 15-8 lead after one quarter.

Pojoaque extended its lead to 20-10 in the second thanks to a three-pointer by Dallas Archibald after she and teammate Ashten Martinez played a an inside-outside game of catch before Archibald hit the outside shot. Then Pojoaque hit a long scoring drought that stretched over four minutes and the Dons were able to cut the lead to 20-15. Pojoaque finally scored again with less than a minute left in the first half thanks to two fast-break layups by Archibald. Pojoaque led 24-15 at halftime.

The Elkettes struggled to score in the third quarter as well, putting up just seven points. The Dons, whose primary offense consists of firing up three-pointers from just about anywhere on the court, were able to cut Pojoaque’s lead to seven points 31-24 going into the fourth quarter

The Elkettes offense finally got going in the fourth quarter thanks to some aggressive play from Michaela Martinez. Twice she took the ball to the basket for layups. On another possession, Martinez had a sweet assist to Archibald for another easy basket. Fighting for rebounds in the paint, Martinez scored on a putback that gave Pojoaque a 41-28 lead.

West Las Vegas managed to cut the lead down to 43-35 after Jenna Bustos’ fourth three-pointer of the game. Martinez sandwiched a pair of baskets around one by teammate Taylor Roybal to extend Pojoaque’s lead to 49-35. The Elkettes held on for the win.

Michaela Martinez scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and led the Elkettes with 14 points. Thronas finished with 11 points, as did Archibald.

The Elkettes will likely make it to the championship game since they have easily defeated the other teams in District 2-4A during the season. They will have to face Robertson again. Pojoaque cannot suffer the scoring droughts like the ones that plagued them against the Dons when they face the second-ranked Cardinals.

“David at one time beat Goliath,” Pojoaque Coach Seledon Martinez said. “We’re holding the ball too long. We need to look up when we get the ball, let it go and we’re gone.”
