El Rito Library Annual Fundraising Art Auction This Weekend

El Rito Library Annual Fundraising Art Auction is Saturday, December 1st.  The Silent Auction runs from noon – 1 p.m., followed by the Live Auction from 1:30 ‒ 3 p.m. Early viewing starts at 11 a.m. This year’s theme celebrates the 2018 Year of The Bird.

With the help of donations from last year’s auction and throughout the year, as well as help from the library’s staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, community partners and several granting agencies, El Rito Library’s 2018 accomplishments include:

  • Doubling the shelving in the children’s room and repainting all existing shelving.
  • The unsightly, crumbling entrance stairs at the community room and the children’s room were removed and replaced with substantial decks for both entrances.
  • The library ran its most successful summer reading program this year, with 18 youth for 10 weeks of creative writing and bookmaking and offered a follow-up creative writing workshop Nov. 17 for the 7th – 10th graders.
  • Staff planned and ran an ambitious archaeology conference designed to inform the community of the long history of human occupation in this region.
  • Hundreds of books and movies have been added to the collection.
  • The library continues providing wi-fi, public computers and librarian help for filling out forms, faxing job applications, and more – all free for all ages in a safe, welcoming environment.

In 2019, El Rito and the four other Rio Arriba Independent Libraries are utilizing grant support to design community assessments in each of their towns that will inform future efforts to encourage grass-roots local economic development to make Northern New Mexico communities more sustainable.
El Rito is also developing a forward-looking plan to replace use of electricity with solar power as a demonstration project with a significant community education component, following the inspiration of the Northern New Mexico College El Rito campus’ new solar array that is soon to materialize.

For the first time in many years, in 2019 the library hopes to offer an after-school program that continues efforts to grow avid readers who will one day be responsible citizens. As always, the library will continue highlighting the creative energies of our unique population here in Northern New Mexico.
The library hopes to raise $10,000 to help accomplish those goals at Saturday’s Art Auction. Half of the funds will go towards continuing building upgrades and half to general operating expenses.
