Edgewood Community Garden Kickoff Festival Is This Weekend

Garden, grow, and have fun at the Edgewood Senior Center

SANTA FE, NM – The Edgewood Community Garden Kickoff Festival is this weekend at the Edgewood Senior Center. This free event includes food, games, giveaways, and music for the entire family from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2019.

The Edgewood Senior and Community Garden project began several years ago with a grant awarded by Santa Fe County. The initial grant was used to install a water catchment system to harvest rain water from the Senior Center’s roof for use in an adjacent garden. Efforts to maintain the garden meet challenges in the past, but a new collaboration between the Santa Fe County Community Services Department and Growth Management Department’s Planning Division, along with the New Mexico State University’s Agricultural Extension Office, and numerous volunteers, have worked to revitalize the garden.

Bringing new life to the project, the partnership between Santa Fe County and New Mexico State University yielded six classes on basic gardening which then stimulated interest from the community. A core group of students began revitalizing and planning the future of the garden. During last fall’s workshop, students built a hoop house, a tunnel standing 14-by-32 feet tall. Today, there are root vegetables, greens, cool weather crops, and transplants growing in the hoop house.

The new garden is a community effort open to all those interested is participating, and new garden rows are now ready to be planted. All those interested in growing their own food are invited to come out to the Edgewood Senior Center at 114 Quail Trail Road in Edgewood, this weekend and sign up for a free row.
