Deputy Struck By Vehicle While Conducting Crash Investigation On US Hwy 84/285

The Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a deputy was struck by a vehicle while conducting a crash investigation.

On Wednesday December 26, 2018 around noon deputies from the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to US Hwy 84-285 near the 193 Mile Marker in Hernandez in reference to a motor vehicle crash caused by snow packed road conditions.

Deputy Cindy Garcia had just exited her marked patrol unit when a south bound vehicle lost control and slid into the crash scene, striking the patrol unit then Deputy Garcia.  Injuries to the deputy are non–life threatening, she was transported via EMS to Presbyterian Hospital in Espanola in fair condition.

Early reports indicate Deputy Garcia suffered a leg fracture, however extent of her injuries are not yet known. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and the investigation is being handled by New Mexico State Police.
