Don and Connie Cobb noticed how students responded to the guitar teachings of daughter, Paula Ward, when she was just 13-14 years old.

“They would come out beaming,” Don Cobb said. “We saw how teacher and student interact. We wanted to support the sacrifice and dedication it takes to be a good teacher. We felt it was something we’d be able to be a part of.”

Don and Connie started the Don and Connie Cobb Endowed Education Scholarship Fund to encourage local students to pursue a career in the teaching profession. Paula Ward is an elementary school teacher in Oregon.

Just before the Cobbs were to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary, Connie passed away. In honor of her memory, the family decided to make a $55,000 donation to the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Foundation. Family members traveled from Oregon to New Mexico. In a small ceremony Aug. 4 at the LANL office in Espanola, the family presented the check to LANL CEO Jenny Parks and Barry Herskovitz of the LANL Board or Directors.

"We’ll be able to increase the amounts of the scholarships, increase the number of awards,” Fox said.

The LANL Foundation was created in 1998 to support the seven counties in Northern New Mexico around the Laboratory. It is funded by donations from LANL employees, who this year donated $400,000 to the Foundation. Since 1998, the Foundation has awarded $6.1 million in scholarships to 1,200 students from Northern New Mexico.
