Breaking News: Espanola Valley High School Students Arrested After Shooting Threat

The Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office confirmed Thursday that two Española Valley High School students have been arrested after making a threat to “let’s shoot it”.

At 8:45am on Thursday February 22, 2018, Deputies working with the School Resource Deputy assigned to the school were already on the campus as a preventive measure when the threat was reported to officials. The students were confronted by a school security guard who overheard part of the conversation among a group of students and they intern told the security guard “Just don’t come to school tomorrow”.

The two students involved are not strangers to the judicial system. Both the 17 year old and 15 year old suspects are already on probation. When Deputies contacted the Juvenile Probation Office they were given authorization to detain the pair based off the threat. Both suspects are currently being held for further questioning at the Rio Arriba Sheriff's Office on the charges of Disorderly Conduct and Interference with the Educational Process. The 17 year old suspect also had a small amount of a controlled substance and will be charged additionally.

School Officials searched lockers and vehicles belonging to the pair and no weapons were found. The school remained in session, Deputies will continue to monitor the campus only as a safety precaution.
