Youth Summit Held Friday:
Over 100 Teen & Adult Supporters Meet To Develop Strategies For Addressing Drug Problems

ESPAÑOLA —  It was sometimes crowded as over 100 area teens filled the conference rooms and corridors at the Santa Clara in hotel in Española Friday. The teens and dozens of adult supporters came together for the 2015 Youth Summit to address drug issues facing the youth of northern New Mexico.
Supporters of the effort came together from the local, tribal, state and federal government as well as from nonprofit and the private sector to help the youth develop plans and strategies that:

  1. represent the interests of the communities,
  2. be responsive to the drug problem that exists in the area,
  3. incorporate the recommendations of the adult’s similar conference from the night before, and
  4. advance the objectives of the key community stakeholders.

Congressman Ben Ray Lujan opened the activities Friday morning in a speech where he made it clear that the youth can be leaders now and that the community would support and help them develop the strategies necessary to make Northern New Mexico a better place to live.

Sponsors for this year’s youth summit include the City of Española, Española Valley Schools, Santa Clara Development Corp., Northern New Mexico Implementation Team and others.
