Winter Winds Knock Down Tree

By ROBERT A. NARANJO

Heavy winter winds along with snow knocked down a large tree next to a home on Sunset Drive in Valley Estates on Saturday night.

The owner was not home when a reporter visited but according to a neighbor, it happened Saturday with the tree landing directly on the garage. The tree had a radius of 24-30 inches and appeared healthy. Damage to the home, from the tree appears to not be extensive.

The National Weather Service reported strong winds and blizzard like conditions throughout much of New Mexico on Saturday night and into Sunday. Sustained winds of over 30 miles per hour with gusts of over 60 miles per hour were reported.

The brunt of the storm appears to have passed through the southern portion of New Mexico with heavy snowfall reported in Roswell and Las Cruces.

The storm also caused treacherous driving conditions statewide, including major road closures. Albuquerque police also reported nearly 200 car accidents on Saturday night.

Locally, the New Mexico Department of Transportation reports that U.S. 64 from Tierra Amarilla to Tres Piedras was closed on Saturday and remained closed into Sunday.
