Udall, FCC To Host Webinar On Rural Digital Opportunity Fund To Improve Connectivity

Friday, June 26, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. MT, U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) will host a webinar with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to discuss the FCC’s new Rural Digital Opportunity Fund to expand rural broadband. During the webinar, Udall will highlight the importance of closing the digital divide for rural New Mexicans. FCC officials will provide further information on the Fund’s application process. The New Mexico Department of Information Technology will also discuss a new broadband data mapping tool.

The Rural Digital Opportunity Fund is a new initiative to connect rural communities across the country with reliable broadband. The FCC will direct up to $20.4 billion over ten years to finance faster broadband networks in unserved and underserved rural areas, connecting millions more American homes and businesses to digital opportunity. Udall, a member of the Senate Broadband Caucus, has consistently pushed for funding for rural broadband in Congress, recently cosponsoring the Broadband DATA Act which was signed into law on March 23, 2020. The legislation will improve the accuracy of the FCC’s broadband availability maps by strengthening the process by which broadband data is collected.
