Tomorrow: Udall to Question Telecom & Tech Leaders on Potential National Security and Privacy Risks

Udall also leads Indians Affairs business meeting on Udall-sponsored bills to strengthen Indian country on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON – On Feb. 6 U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Commerce Committee and vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, will push for several New Mexico and Indian Country priorities in a Senate hearing and business meeting. 

At 8 a.m. MT /10 a.m. ET, Udall will question telecommunications and technology industry leaders on the potential national security and privacy risks associated with the use of Chinese telecommunications technology at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing titled “Winning the Race to 5G and the Next Era of Technology Innovation in the United States.” During the hearing, Udall will raise concerns that the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment in 5G networks could undermine core U.S. national security interests.

At 12:30 p.m. MT /2:30 p.m. ET, Udall will join Senate Committee on Indian Affairs Chairman John Hoeven (R-N.D.) in leading a business meeting to consider three bills that he has championed, including legislation to revitalize Native American languages, provide rental assistance for homeless or at-risk veterans in Indian Country, and promote small business development in Tribal communities, along with a budget resolution for the 116th Congress.

The business before the committee includes:

  • S. 256 — A bill to amend the Native American Programs Act of 1974 to provide flexibility and reauthorization to ensure the survival and continuing vitality of Native American languages
  • S. 257 — A bill to provide for rental assistance for homeless or at-risk Indian veterans, and for other purposes
  • S. 294 —A bill to establish a business incubators program within the Department of the Interior to promote economic development in Indian reservation communities
  • Committee on Indian Affairs Budget Resolution for the 116th Congress
