TODAY: Udall to Lead Indian Affairs Oversight Hearing on Native Juvenile Justice

WASHINGTON – Today, Wednesday, September 26U.S. Senator Tom Udall, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, will join Committee Chairman John Hoeven (R-N.D.) in leading an oversight hearing entitled “Justice for Native Youth: The GAO Report on Native American Youth Involvement in Justice Systems and Information on Grants to Help Address Juvenile Delinquency.”

The oversight hearing will bring together scholars, advocates, tribal judges, and administration officials to discuss a recently released Government Accountability Office (GAO) report on juvenile justice in Indian Country. The report summarizes available data on Native youth in federal, state, and tribal justice systems and examines grants available to Tribes to address and prevent juvenile delinquency.

During the oversight hearing, Udall will question administration witnesses from the Department of the Interior and the Department of Justice about how they can improve data collection on juvenile justice issues. Udall will also speak with Judge Abby Abinanti, Chief Justice of the Yurok Tribe, on her Tribe’s work on restorative justice and wellness courts as models of culturally-informed rehabilitation tools.

Immediately preceding the oversight hearing, the Committee will vote on three bills: S. 465, the Independent Outside Audit of the Indian Health Service Act of 2017; S. 2154, the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas Water Rights Settlement Agreement Act; and, S. 2599, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Reservation Restoration Act.
