With thousands of roaring fans watching on, the Española Valley Sundevils came back in the final minute of the Class 5A state championship basketball game and defeated Capital High School 36-34 to win their second state championship March 13 at the Pit in Albuquerque.

The Sundevils trailed 34-30 with 47.4 seconds left to play. After a free throw by Marcos Flores made the score 34-31, the Sundevils forced a turnover and Flores was back on the line, where he nailed two more free throws to get Española within a point with 22.5 seconds left. With 11.6 seconds left, Capital’s Jerome Arroyo missed the front end of a one-and-one. Azaziah Salazar was fouled on the rebound and with 10 seconds left sank both of his free throws to put the Sundevils in front for just the second time in the game.

Capital’s Augie Larranaga drove to the basket and made the shot, but was called for an offensive foul. Christian Fernandez was fouled and went to the line. He made one of his two free throws to make the score 36-34 with 2.7 seconds left in the game. A desperation shot by Capital was off the mark and the Sundevils were champions.
