Superintendent To Hold Community Meeting In Velarde To Discuss School’s Future

ESPANOLA – Española Public Schools Interim Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez announced Tuesday afternoon that the school district will host a community meeting at Velarde Elementary School on Monday, June 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium to discuss the pending closure of Velarde Elementary School, and the Board of Education’s decision last week to ask the court for injunctive relief against PED’s decision to deny the district’s application for Closure and Reorganization of Velarde Elementary School to Alcalde Elementary School.

As previously reported HERE, PED has now denied the school district’s request to Close Velarde Elementary twice. The first denial letter was sent on May 22, 2015, and a second denial was received on June 9.

In a press release interim Superintendent Gutierrez said “I think it’s important for the Velarde community to understand all that has transpired the last few months, and that they hear this directly from me, rather than relying on hearsay. I look forward to meeting with the community and answering their questions, as well as presenting them with some district information about the Board’s decision.”

A second meeting will take place on Thursday, June 25 at Carlos Vigil Middle

School at 5:30 p.m., in order to accommodate parents and community members

that have work obligations in Española, and might not be able to attend Monday

night’s meeting.
