State Police DWI Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols in Rio Arriba and Across the State in April

Statewide — State Police will be conducting Sobriety Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols and Registration, Insurance and Drivers’ License Checkpoints in Rio Arriba County and all New Mexico counties during the month of April.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) cites reduced rates of DWI arrests and alcohol related accidents as indicators that efforts such as police checkpoints are reducing alcohol related fatalities. DPS attributes this behavioral change to the continued media attention and intensive advertising.

A DPS provided press release said “These checkpoints are helping to change society’s attitude about drinking and driving. People are choosing to not drink and drive. This is the biggest step in keeping impaired drivers from crashing into our friends and families. Hundreds of lives could be saved each year if every driver had the courage to make the right decision.”
