Starbucks Coming To Espanola!

Staff Report

A new option for caffeine addicts will soon be available to area residents, with the official groundbreaking of a Starbucks coffee shop.

Monday afternoon a group of city officials and interested people gathered in the empty lot between Chili’s and Freddy’s to break ground on the latest group of businesses. Developer Josh Skarsgard with Southwest Development explained to the event attendees that a Starbucks with both inside service and a drive-thru will be the anchor tenant in a new complex, that will also include a Great Clips hair salon, a Verizon store, and a T-Mobile store.

Skarsgard explained that the new Espanola Starbucks is the first of its kind, in what Starbucks is calling their “rural prototype store”. Traditionally Starbucks are only opened in more urban communities or areas with a larger population.

Local dignitaries who participated in the groundbreaking included Espanola Mayor Alice Lucero, City Councilors Peggy Sue Martinez, Pedro Valdez and Robert Seeds, and local businesswoman and property owner Kate Fishman. Also involved was City Manager Mark Trujillo, City Clerk Anna Squires and Planning & Land Use Director Patrick Nicholson. The Espanola Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Trish Padilla was also on hand to welcome the new development.

Skarsgard added during the ceremony that Nicholson and the planning department “went the extra mile to help us get the permitting done right”, making it possible for the store to happen.

Skarsgard said construction will begin immediately and the complex should be complete within four months. Expect the coffee to start flowing sometime around August.
