Sheriff Brings In Support From Surrounding Communities For Pilgrimage To Chimayo

Staff Report

To ensure the safety of pilgrims and community members for this year’s Good Friday walk to the Santuario chapel in Chimayo, Rio Arriba County Sheriff James Lujan pulled out all the stops and called in help from neighboring communities.

The Los Alamos Police Department joined with the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office and provided “mounted officers” on bikes. Several Los Alamos police officers joined with several Rio Arriba Sherriff Deputies on bike patrol along the roads to the Santuario to help ensure public safety during the annual pilgrimage to Chimayo. Rio Arriba Deputies also mounted up on horseback, attracting lots of attention and requests to pet the horses from younger pilgrims during the day.
