Los Alamos Daily Post

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office notified next of kin and has now released the names of the people involved in a car and 18-wheeler accident Saturday afternoon near Anderson Overlook on the Main Hill Road.

Public Information Officer Juan Ríos identified Colleen O’Bannon, 29, of Dallas, Texas, as the driver of a silver Honda who succumbed to her injuries. Her passenger is identified as Emma Garelick, 28, of Denton, Texas who sustained minor injuries.

“The driver of the 18-wheeler is Robert Erickson, 67, of Del Norte, Colo., who has no reported injuries,” Ríos.

Ríos said the accident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. Saturday. It was raining. The preliminary report indicates that Erickson was driving east on N.M. 502 after delivering hay to residents in Los Alamos. As the driver entered the downhill portion of the Main Hill Road near Anderson Overlook, he crossed over into the westbound lane.

O’Bannon hit the rear tires of the semi-truck and her car flipped over onto its roof. The semi-truck came to rest on top of her car, he said, adding that O’Bannon and Garelick were wearing their seatbelts.

“We have two agencies investigating this accident,” Ríos said in an interview today with the Los Alamos Daily Post. “State Police are looking into the safety conditions of the commercial truck, which is registered in Colorado. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is looking into the fatality.”

This accident remains an open and ongoing investigation, and so far, no citations have been issued, Ríos said, adding that due to the complexity of this accident, he anticipates it will take some 45 days before a full report is completed.
