THURSDAY: Udall to Discuss Economic Development at Small Businesses in Española Valley, Meet with Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo Leaders, Highlight Need to Extend LWCF at Valles Caldera National Preserve

This week, U.S. Senator Tom Udall will discuss economic development with small business owners in Northern New Mexico and the need to extend the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) at Valles Caldera National Preserve. During his Thursday visit to the Española Valley, Udall will also meet with Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo leaders and visit a historic preservation project at the pueblo. On Friday, Udall will host a roundtable discussion on the future of the LWCF with New Mexico Wildlife Federation leaders and other partners at Valles Caldera.

Thursday morning, Udall will drop by Angelina’s Restaurant and meet with restaurant owner Fidel Gutierrez to discuss how raising the minimum wage promotes economic development. Gutierrez recently increased wages for his hourly workers and supports Udall’s bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $12 by 2020.

Later Thursday morning, Udall will visit with the owners of Avanyu, LLC, a Native American, woman-owned construction company. Udall will meet with owners Liana Sanchez and Mateo Peixinho at a charter school the company helped build, La Tierra Montessori School of the Arts and Sciences. While at the school, Udall will also meet with teachers and school leadership.

Thursday afternoon, Udall will visit the Governor’s Office at Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo and tour a historic preservation project funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Friday morning, Udall will host a roundtable discussion at Valles Caldera National Preserve to discuss the urgent need to extend the Land and Water Conservation Fund before it expires at the end of the month. Representatives from the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and several other conservation partners will join the conversation. Udall will also receive an update on the management transition of the Valles Caldera from the Valles Caldera Trust to the National Park Service.
