School District Files Lawsuit Against State
ESPAÑOLA – The Española Public School District plans to file a law suit against the New Mexico Public Education Department on Monday regarding the closing of Velarde Elementary in Santa Fe with district court.
Interim Superintendent Bobbi Gutierrez informed the Valley Daily Post that the school district is asking for an expedited hearing and is hoping to have a decision within ten days so as to be able to make the necessary preparations for the upcoming school year. Should the court ruled against the school district and not permit the closure of Velarde Elementary the school district Board of Education would need to meet again to amend the proposed budget to reflect this additional expense.
As previously reported HERE the Española Public School District was facing a budget shortfall this year. In order to balance the budget the school board adopted a budget recommendation Friday, June 12 that included a number of budget cuts, including the closure of Velarde Elementary.
The Valley Daily Post will continue to cover this developing story.
