School Board Votes To Change Superintendent: Board Says They Want To Move In New Direction
ESPAÑOLA — Tuesday evening, the Española Public Schools Board of Education passed a motion to not renew Dr. Daniel Trujillo’s contract as Superintendent of Schools on a 3-2 vote.
Dr. Trujillo has served in the capacity of superintendent since 2013 and previously as an administrator at area schools. He was placed on paid administrative leave Wednesday morning and a special School Board meeting has been called for Monday, April 27, in the morning to select an interim superintendent.
Pablo Lujan, president of the Española Public Schools Board spoke with the Valley Daily Post Wednesday and said “It was a very tough decision but ultimately the decision was made not to rehire the superintendent. It was not a unanimous vote but ultimately the district wants to move in a new direction. “School Board President Lujan also expressed appreciation for Trujillo saying “We are very thankful for everything Superintendent Trujillo did in that role and as an administrator before that. We’ve been through some difficult choices as a district and commend him for leading us through those difficult choices. I am very thankful for what he has done for us.”
When questioned about reasons for the motion to not renew the superintendent contract, Lujan said that the board had concerns over continued declining enrollment and overall graduation rates, but he said “In general there was a desire to see the district moving forward and we did not see it happening as quickly as we would like.”
Voting in favor of ending the superintendent’s contract was Board President Pablo Lujan, Yolanda Salazar, and Ruben Archuleta. Board Vice President Lucas Fresquez and Secretary Annabelle Almager voted against the motion to not renew the contract.
