Rio Arriba Democrats Elect Leadership
Nationwide the Democratic Party has seen an influx of new activism in the wake of the November 2016 presidential election. Town halls and party meetings are seeing many people who had never been involved before suddenly showing up. Rio Arriba appears to be no exception.
A big crowd showed up on a Friday evening, March 31 for the Democratic party of Rio Arriba County biannual convention at the Hernandez Community Center. Longtime party stalwarts who normally attend these meetings were joined by several new faces as the progressive wing of the party appears to be becoming more active.
The meeting, which occurs every two years, was held to elect officers and members of the State Central Committee at the Hernandez Community Center.
Candidate for the state chair position Richard Ellenberg was in attendance along with Jeff Carr, candidate for lieutenant governor and Peter DeBenedittis, candidate for governor.
And enthusiastic group reelected Alex Naranjo as County Party Chair and Joann Salazar as County Party Vice-Chair by acclamation.
In accordance with the state party’s rules, the available seats for the state central committee are evenly divided by gender. Three Men and three women were elected to the State Central Committee. Those elected include:
- Leroy Ortiz
- Jeremy Maestas
- Robert Seeds
- Laura Seeds

The newly elected officers and State Central Committee members from the Rio Arriba party will attend the State Central Committee convention on April 29 to elect officers to the state party for a two-year term.
