The Española Valley High school gates opened at approximately 3:15 allowing staff to depart and soon after some students began leaving campus for rides waiting nearby. Other students were waiting for the buses which had been delayed by the incident.
Some parents waiting outside the gates reported that at approximately 3 o’clock the Española Public Schools automated parent notification system called parents phone and a recorded message explained that earlier in the day a former student had come onto campus and was confronted by security guards. This former student eluded the guards and left campus but returning a short time later with a hunting rifle. As the individual with the gun came on campus he was observed through security cameras and police and security guards quickly moved to intercept him. He was taken into custody a short time later.
Initial reports are no persons were injured and no shots were fired during the incident. Española Public Schools Board member Anabelle Almager was also present at the scene and when asked to comment said “I’m very thankful nothing happened and security and police reacted so quickly.”
Sheriff James Lujan confirmed one individual was in custody.
The public school and local police forces are planning a news conference at approximately 4:30 at the Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office. More details to come as they are available

A return to a normal schedule at Española Valley High School was interrupted a little past noon Thursday when the school initiated a lockdown for all students. School gates were closed and police were called in to secure the perimeter while students were moved to the gymnasium. Several students called their parents to let them know and many parents went to the school to pick up their children on the suspicion of another threat similar to earlier in the week.
However this time school officials decided no one was to come in or out of the school, at least for the time being. Parents were lined up outside the gates of the high school waiting to learn what is going on.
Attempts were made to contact police and Española Schools officials but no responses have been received as of publishing time.
In the meantime rumors are swirling. Some individuals inside the school are texting to family members that an individual armed with a semi-automatic gun was apprehended on campus and police are searching for possible additional suspects in the area.
In the meantime the school remains in complete lock down.
Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops.
