Police Cooperation Brings Kidnap Victim Home Safely

Staff Report

An Amber Alert, open eyed citizens and strong cooperation between several law enforcement agencies brought a potentially tragic situation to a peaceful close when Española City Police successfully located a juvenile who had been the subject of a frantic Amber Alert search and took her abductor into custody.

The string of events began late Saturday evening in Peñasco. A Peñasco family had their lives turned upside down when Christian Orozoco, a 21 year old man allegedly entered the home and held the residents at gunpoint. Orozoco allegedly entered the home to force Angelica Valdez a 15 year old granddaughter of the home owners to leave with him. Orozoco allegedly threatened to kill the girls grandparents if they did not cooperate.

Orozoco allegedly forced the girl to leave with him and fled Peñasco in a brown car. Taos Sheriff Deputies were contacted by the family at 6:51 p.m. and issued an Amber Alert for Valdez and her abductor late Saturday night.

Sometime early Sunday morning a tip was called into law enforcement and Española

Española police dispatch was contacted about a possible location where the victim may be located.

Española Police Deputy Chief Matthew Vigil spoke with the Valley Daily Post Sunday, and provided a summary of how the victim was rescued.

According to Deputy Chief Vigil, Española police dispatch was informed that the suspect may have taken the victim to a residence on Star Lighter Loop in Española.

Police dispatch contacted available police officers and Española Police Officer Robert Vigil conducted a “roll by”. Officer Vigil confirmed that the suspect’s vehicle, with matching license plate was parked in front of the residence.

Officer Vigil then called in additional resources in order to attempt to safely recover the missing girl and apprehend the suspect. Additional Española police officers arrived on scene, as well as State Police Officers, and an officer from Game & Fish.

The law enforcement team surrounded the residence and then used a PA system to address the occupants of the residence.

At that time the suspect and kidnapping victim exited the residence through the back entrance but was apprehended by police officers stationed behind the home.

The victim was safely recovered and the suspect, Orozoco was taken into custody. Police sources report that Orozoco was found with a weapon. Orozoco is now in custody at the Rio Arriba County Jail for this and a previous charge.

According to Deputy Chief Vigil, Española Police Sergeant Jason Gallegos then turned the scene over to the State Police Investigation Team for a full forensics examination of the site.
