The Pojoaque Valley High School boys basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak and picked up a District 2-4A win with a 46-28 victory over Moriarty High School Feb. 1 at Pojoaque. The Elks led from start to finish after jumping out to an 8-0 lead to start the game.
Pojoaque’s Sean Aragon canned a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter and the Elks looked like they would blow the Pintos out of the gym after scoring 18 points in the first quarter to just eight for Moriarty. The scoring dropped off dramatically in the second quarter. Both teams combined for just nine points, five of which belonged to Pojoaque. The Elks led 23-12 at halftime.
In the second half, Moriarty managed to cut Pojoaque’s lead down to seven points in the third quarter 25-18 after a pair of free throws by Julian Encinias. Aragon answered with a three-pointer. After a basket by the Pintos’ Tyler Ortiz, Pojoaque’s Luis Garcia added a free throw and a basket to push the lead up to 31-20 and Pojoaque would lead by double digits for the rest of the game. The Elks led 32-20 at the end of the third quarter.
The Elks started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 38-22 lead and had no trouble holding off the Pintos the rest of the way for a 46-28 victory. Moriarty had trouble scoring throughout the game. A pair of free throws by Aragon accounted for the game’s final points.
“This is big for us psychologically,” Pojoaque Coach Thomas Vigil said. “We played smart the whole game. When we learn to play within our capabilities we’ll be more competitive.”
Aragon led the Elks with 13 points. Garcia was the only player on either team to score in each quarter and finished with 12 points. Reyes Chavez led the Pintos with nine points.
Pojoaque improved to 6-14 on the season and 1-2 in District 2-4A. The Elks play at Los Alamos Thursday (2/7) in their next District 2-4A game. Los Alamos is still looking for their first win in District 2-4A.
