Pojoaque Girls on the Run Participate In 5K Race Saturday

The Pojoaque Girls on the Run program is finishing up their 6th Season on Saturday. May 18 at the Santa Fe Run Around 5K race on the Santa Fe Plaza. The 10-week curriculum program supports young girls in grades 3 – 5 in developing heathy relationships, managing healthy life styles and becoming a great team mate all while training for a 5k. Pojoaque Coaches RayLynn Aguino and Heather Trujillo have been heading the Pojoaque site for the last 6 seasons.  The girls start practices by telling each other one positive thing about their day, then go into a lesson and after they engage in physical activity.

“It has been such a wonderful experience to be around such charismatic girls who are becoming strong, loving human beings that are going to grow up and do great things!” (Coach RayLynn) “This program really is not possible without help from Coach Heather and all the parents who are motivating these girls to try new things, so a BIG shout out to them!”

“My Favorite part about being a part of the Girls on the Run Organization as a Co-Coach, is at the end of the year on Race Day seeing how happy and excited each girl is when they cross the Finish line.  It’s not easy to Run 3.1 Miles, but they work hard all season long.  It has been a blessing to work alongside Coach RayLynn for the past 6 years and to also see many of our girls who start running in our continue with their running careers in school after they leave us. “(Coach Heather)

Running buddies join the girls on race day and give them motivation to cross the finish line. “I think one of the best parts for us as coaches is watching the participant and running buddy cross that finish line on race day. The expressions on their faces is what keeps us coming back every year, you really can’t describe the feeling unless you have been a part of their journey and what it took for them to get there. A lot of parents or running buddies feel like they don’t have what it takes to make it, but they work with us all season and its an accomplishment for everyone involved.” (Coach RayLynn)
