Northern To Keep ‘College’ In Its Name (For Now)
ESPAÑOLA — In an open letter to students, faculty and staff at Northern New Mexico College NNMC President Nancy “Rusty” Barceló addressed several issues including confusion regarding the change of the institutions name from “Northern New Mexico College” to “Northern New Mexico University.”
In January the Board of Regents received a legal opinion confirming their authority to change the name of the school. Based on that opinion they voted to adopt the “university” moniker to better reflect the institutions growing role (See earlier Valley Daily Post article HERE).
This name change ran into resistance from some legislators during this year’s legislative session.
In Monday’s letter President Barceló addressed this issue stating that the Board of Regents has opted to keep “college” in the name, at least for now. Barceló wrote “Board President Chayo Garcia acknowledged concerns that have been raised about the name change. In light of these concerns, the Board has elected to continue to identify the institution as Northern New Mexico College and re-introduce legislation in 2016 to officially change the name to Northern New Mexico University in statute.”
