Northern New Mexico College is holding a special community forum to discuss a new specialized academic program for student athletes at the campus in El Rito. All students would live in the dorms at El Rito full time and receive college-level/college-credit instruction from NNMC faculty for one year.
The community forum is scheduled for Saturday 2/25/17–2:00 p.m. at the college in El Rito Alumni Hall (Old Gym – North Dorm Building)
NNMC President Rick Bailey is inviting all members of the public to attend to discuss the issue at greater
length.
These students would be seeking to upgrade their high school academic-achievement levels/scores so that they can meet the high eligibility threshold to receive athletic scholarships at colleges across the nation.
In addition to maintaining a full-time class load, these students would participate in athletic programs including competition with teams from other schools/colleges. Upwards of 60 students could be living in the dorms at El Rito.
In addition to the NNMC faculty employed for this program, other college staff (kitchen, housekeeping, maintenance etc.) would once again be employed at El Rito.
NNMC would operate this program in partnership with a group now based in Arizona, which has sponsored similar programs with great success. That group would have
full time residential counselors/non-academic staff at the campus in El Rito to supervise/mentor these student athletes. Such programs are in operation across the USA.
Tentatively, the new program is set to begin operations in
August, 2017, pending positive input from the local community.
But Bailey/NNMC will not move forward with this project unless they have the support and approval of the local community (“greater El Rito” area—Northern Rio Arriba County).
Community members would likely have numerous questions about this program and their approval/support depends on the answers they receive. Bailey will answer all those questions and provide extensive details regarding this proposal Saturday.  Some questions might include
