ESPANOLA, NM: It’s official! Northern New Mexico College is now a university. On January 27th the school’s Board of Regents unanimously approved the change of the name to Northern New Mexico University. The change came on the recommendation of the school’s Academic Affairs Committee.
President Nancy Barceló said the name change would reduce confusion between the school’s component colleges and the university as a whole. She added that it would help the institution be regarded with equal status as other state institutions, such as Western New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands.
The name change does not constitute a change in the school’s status or offerings.
Northern, with campuses in Española and El Rito, currently offers 13 bachelor’s degree programs and in recent years has expanded post-baccalaureate opportunities through partnerships with other schools.
