Northern Drafts Bailey For Presidency
Thursday morning the Northern New Mexico College Board of Regents met in executive session to make their final selections for the new president of the Española and El Rito based college. The board soon came out of executive session and announced that they had selected Dr. Richard J. Bailey Jr. as the new President of Northern.
Dr. Bailey Who currently serves as the Dean of Students for the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies in Colorado Springs informed the Board that he would be able to accept the position starting in October of this year.
Dr. Bailey was one of four finalists including current interim president Domingo Sanchez, Dr. Catherine Martinez Berryhill, and Dr. Andres C. Salazar. Dr. Bailey was the only one of the four finalists who has not previously worked at Northern. Bailey, who is a first generation college graduate earned his PhD at Georgetown University in Washington DC in 2006 and comes to Northern with several years of senior leadership experience, both inside the military and an academic environment. On April 18 Northern held a public forum to present the four finalists for the position of President at NNMC. For two hours the four finalists presented their personal vision for the college and took questions from the audience. Dr. Bailey stressed the importance of the president focusing on securing the financial viability of the school and getting out of the way to allow the faculty to educate the students.
Baily also introduced his wife who is a native of northern New Mexico and explained that although he is not originally from New Mexico it is his family’s goal to make northern New Mexico their permanent home.
