NNMC Hosts ‘Renewable Energy Festival: Bringing Power to the People!’
Española —Earth Day Weekend, April 21 and 22, Northern New Mexico College will host the first annual ‘Renewable Energy Festival: Bringing Power to the People!’ Two days of education, demonstrations, fun family-centered activities, and performing arts entertainment: This free public event is an opportunity to learn about and get involved with renewable energy and the transition to a new energy economy.
The festival opens Friday, April 21 from 6-8pm, with a welcome from Dr. Rick Bailey, President of NNMC, followed by live performances at the Nick Salazar Center for the Arts. Performers include: the Sikh Community Choir, Moving Arts Española Youth Folklorico, the Peñasco Theater Collective, Compania Chuscales and Mina Fajardo, Dancing Earth Contemporary Dance Creations, a Native Youth Blessing Suite featuring a flute and contemporary dance solo, Hoop Dancers from the pueblos of Ohkay Owingeh and Pojoaque, folk musicians David Garcia and Cipriano Vigil, the Cavalcante Jazz Ensemble, and 2017 Hispano Music Awards Female Bilingual Vocalist of the Year Chelsea Chavez, with her father Steve Chavez.
On Earth Day, Saturday April 22, the festival will feature fun family-oriented activities and user-friendly educational presentations and demonstrations from 9am – 3pm on the NNMC campus. Topics include: Green Building, Passive Solar Design, Adobe Construction, Conserving Energy in the Home, and Solar, Wind and Geothermal Technologies. Alcalde Elementary students will conduct adobe building workshops using curriculum provided by the LANL Foundation’s Inquiry Science Education Consortium (ISEC). The Rio Arriba County Department of Health will offer a free meal from 12 – 1pm, featuring Frito Pies and healthy vegetarian entree salads, beverages, and desserts. Live music and entertainment will round out the afternoon.
