Quay County- On September 4, 2020, the Tucumcari Police Department responded to a shooting incident that occurred at 1011 South Jackson in Tucumcari, NM. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to take over the investigation.
Through investigation and interviews, State Police agents learned at around 1:10 p.m., a male subject identified as Joshua Braziel (30) of Tucumcari, NM was inside the residence along with a female and another male identified as Bryan Youman (19) of Tucumcari, NM. Braziel who was in his bedroom at the time, admitted he had smoked methamphetamine earlier in the day before approaching Youman, who was sitting on a recliner couch in the living room. Braziel approached Youman with a 9mm Beretta handgun and shot Youman in the head at least once. During a search of the residence, State Police agents also found several small baggies of methamphetamine, two more handguns and a rifle with a homemade silencer.
Youman was transported by emergency personnel to the Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari. Youman succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
An arrest warrant was issued for Joshua Braziel through the Quay County Magistrate Court on September 4th, 2020. On the same day, Braziel was arrested and taken into custody without incident and booked into the Quay County Detention Center. Braziel was charged with the following:
- Murder in the 1st Degree (Open Count) 30-02-01(A), a 1st Degree Felony contrary to NMSA 1978.
- Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine) 30-31-23(E), a 4th Degree Felony contrary to NMSA 1978.v
