WIPP Emergency Operations Center Activated As Precautionary Measure

At approximately 6 p.m. Tuesday, Radiological Control Technicians detected minute levels of radiation on the filter at Station B where air is exhausted from the WIPP underground.
As a precaution, WIPP personnel were directed to shelter in place. Radiological control technicians have NOT received any indication of a release underground. There is no indication of any kind of radiological release leaving the WIPP site.
The WIPP Emergency Operations Center was declared operational at 7:45 p.m. All WIPP personnel have been accounted for.
Underground personnel are staged at assembly area and accounted for. Radiation Control Technicians continue to conduct radiological surveys to validate no release has occurred. As a precaution, notifications to local ranchers and industry personnel have been completed.

CARLSBAD – The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated as a precautionary measure in response to slightly elevated radiological readings at the WIPP site.
