El Llano – New Hope Family Worship Center, numbering close to 150 members, are benefactors to the Espanola Valley to the extent that New Hope’s giving back to the community belie its membership total. It’s as if the congregation is much larger.
Pastor Isaac Herrera and his wife, Bianca, who is also a pastor, and members of the church have had several community outreach projects. For a number of years, New Hope has provided Thanksgiving baskets to area families, in addition to a Christmas shoe drive, and a backpack for schoolchildren drive.
It was for the latter that Herrera and some of the church members were recognized by Mayor Alice Lucero and the City Council for their backpack for area schoolchildren effort.
However, Pastor Herrera told the Council that the backpack drive was so successful that nearly 600 children showed up for one, but there were only 360 available, so nearly 200 kids did not receive a backpack.
Mayor Lucero and City Councilors suggested to Herrera that he formally request a co-sponsorship from the City for the backpack drive. If city attorney, Frank Coppler finds no problem with the city helping with next year’s New Hope’s backpack drive, then the city can help how it can to assure that no child is turned away who wants and needs a backpack for school. At the minimum, getting city employees to help.
Pastor Herrera, his wife Bianca, and members of New Hope were thanked and praised by the Mayor and City Council for their efforts to help the community with their outreach programs, especially where it helps children.
