New Chimayo Park Opens With Huge Crowd Attending Ribbon Cutting

CHIMAYO – On Sunday, June 14, Rio Arriba County celebrated the completion and ribbon cutting of the new Rio Arriba County Park in Chimayo.

The Rio Arriba County Park in Chimayo was originally conceived of by County Commissioner Barney Trujillo and has been under development for nearly two years. It was finally completed after resolving delays caused by Construction Industry Division (CID) permitting and project planning issues.

The final details of the project were completed last week and a ribbon-cutting occurred Sunday afternoon with over 500 local residents attending. Mariachi music, a low-rider car show, and face painting were part of the daylong festivities. Hamburgers, hot dogs and watermelon for 500 people were provided by the contractors who helped build the park.

The new Chimayo Park, the brainchild of Commissioner Barney Trujillo who represents the Chimayo area, includes a basketball court a half court, a miniature football field with artificial turf, a three-story tall play structure with slides, and exercise equipment for adults. The park also has covered picnic areas with grills for families. The park is designed with something for all ages to encourage intergenerational use and to create a community gathering place.

Commissioner Trujillo said at the ribbon cutting “This is a totally family oriented place, from kids to seniors to come and use, and have a great day.”
John Paul Romero, who was hired by the County as the Director of Grants and Contracts after the project ran into delays, helped oversee the process to bring it back on track and to completion. Romero said final construction will come in at around $1 million.
County manager Tomas Campos said the park will be open every day from sunup to sundown with county employees on-site to make sure everything is in proper operating order.

Sherriff James Lujan also addressed the crowd and received a large round of applause when he said that the Sheriff’s Department will conduct regular patrols day and night in the area. Commissioner Danny Garcia also spoke on Rio Arriba County’s efforts to create more quality of life resources for the communities.

The park is located at the Chimayo Arboleda Community Center. Check out some more pictures from the dedication events below.
